In the fifties of the fifteenth century, the archbishop of Palermo Simone Beccadelli started the construction of a new archbishop’s palace in an area between the upper stretch of the ancient Cassaro road and the churchyard created along the southern side of the cathedral, whose arrangement had engaged his predecessors since the thirties of the same century. This article presents four engravings that bear witness to the most significant stages of the celebrations organised in Catania for the funeral of the Prince of Biscari, Ignazio Paternò Castello, on 2 September 1786. This graphic corpus constitutes the last opportunity to celebrate the prince’s memory and prominence based on the models established by European courts, but at the same time it reveals more recondite aspects of the research into phenomena of emulation in architecture and self-representation that have not emerged to date from studies on the aristocrat from Catania and that reflect above all the way of life of a cultured personality driven by great ambitions. On September 1st 1726 Palermo was hit by a violent earthquake. Although it did not bring about the destruction of the city, the earthquake caused widespread and extensive damage to the architectural heritage. The local insti- tutions carried out a series of actions involving representatives of the technical culture. These actions affected the subsequent appearance of the urban pattern and influenced the construction methods of the time. Crossing the data taken from chronicles of the time, from maps produced after the earthquake and above all copious archival documents, the research aims to reconstruct the state in which Palermo was after that tragic event, highlighting a number of aspects. …

The Bonet Palace in Palermo still shows characters linjed to the great 15th construction period, despite being heavily tampered with and transformed. The importance of the architecture had already been recognized by contemporaries, while from the current point of view the aspects related to the social rice of the owner stand out. The essay examines these issues and tries to offer some answers also on the original appearance of the building.

A building supposedly belonged to the House of Chiaramonte (or Chiaromonte) in Sicily was kept for several centuries inside the volume of a larger building in the Kalsa district of Islamic foundation, in Palermo. The sudden detachment of the plaster and some stone elements at the beginning of the 80s of the 20th century made it possible to identify the traces of the façade of a fourteenth-century tower-house, characterized by a series of four windows with pointed arched elements and archivolts with rings of broken sticks, surmounted by a weft of interwoven bands of two-tone stone elements. Il "Sacruma Regium Palatium" di Palermo rapppresenta nell'immaginario collettivo siciliano la testimonianza materiale più illustre dei fasti della corona d'Altavilla e in particolare dell'età ruggeriana: non a caso ancora oggi il complesso prende il nome di "Palazzo dei Normanni".
